Realizing the need of education for children as well as adults given high illiteracy and lower enrollments/higher dropouts in the district, AWA thinks that education is the first and foremost need of the target communities of the district especially of those living in the rural areas. Therefore AWA has been trying to work on both literacy programs for adults and education and education initiatives for children. So far it has been successful in achieving the following:

1. AWA has also implemented Adult Literacy Project with the support of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) during 2005-06. It consisted on two phases.
• Phase I: Ten centers (4 male and 6 female) were established in six villages of UC Jarwar. In these centers 110 male, while 158 female were made literate.
• Phase II: In Second phase 25 centers for females were set up. Through these 25 centers 104 adult male and 781 adult women has been literate in a one year.


2. AWA is also member organization of Pakistan Collation for Education (PCE) Islamabad, AWA celebrates educational weeks since 2008 in District Ghotki through awareness activities for increasing of enrolment particularly Girls. It also organizes awareness seminars/ rallies and walks for improvement of quality education and enrolment.


3. With the Partnership of Sindh Education Foundation Karachi (SEF), Allakh opened one Girls Primary School Village Kehar Gabol UC Keenjhar Tehsil Daharki, District Ghotki from August 2011. 119 Girls and 27 boys have been enrolled and getting Primary Education.


4. It has started school safety program in six Government Primary Schools of the district. Under this program AWA conducted the following activities:
• Three Boys and three Girls Schools of Three UCs of Tehsil Mirpur Mathelo selected.
• Group formation of children.
• School Safety Committee Formation.
• Capacity building training on DRR & First Aid.

Being a feudal and tribal area enshrined in illiteracy and poverty the population of the district Ghotki especially womenfolk have been victims of violation and denial of various fundamental human, constitutional and political rights. AWA is of the view that there is need of work on two fronts to safeguard the rights of the people of the area. One front there is need of mass mobilization and awareness campaign to educate the people about their rights and one the other front there is need of advocating and lobbying with government officials and agencies; and other stakeholders to ensure the rights of the people are protected and safeguarded through effective administrative, judicial and legal measures. AWA has undertaken following activities in this regard so far:

1. Allakh is an active partner of National Human Rights Network of “Democratic Commission for Human Development” (DCHD). DCHD initiated two year long Human Rights Community Awareness Program during 2003-04. Under this program, AWA conducted these activities:
• Human rights perception survey at district level conducted.
• Community dialogues on what are human rights, child rights, women rights and citizen’s rights carried out.
• Formation of Human Rights Committees at village level.


2. Allakh is also partner of two years long “National Program of Tolerance & Social Harmony” of the Democratic Commission for Human Development (DCHD). Under this program AWA:


• Formed District Core Group and participating its different capacity building trainings.
• Conducted community dialogues on tolerance and social harmony.


3. Allakh is also partner of Oxfam’s long term campaign “we can end honor killing”2006 to 2011. Under this partnership, AWA did the following activities:


• Arrangement of awareness activities with Communities, Media, Lawyers and Youth.
• Identification of youth for connectors, now it has 200 connectors .
• Arrangement of seminars and rallies against EVAW.

Poverty is one of the major problems which has created a situation of vicious circle for the people of the area. Women, rural population and ethnic and religious minorities are the worst effected sections of the society. In order to break this vicious circle, multi-pronged initiatives are needed. Agriculture especially sustainable agriculture is one of the most effective tools to fight poverty, hunger and economic deprivation. AWA believes that solution to these challenges lies in sustainable agriculture that builds upon and gives value to specifically small and marginalized farmers. Sustainable agriculture is simply the low input sustainable, climate resilient, biodiversity-friendly and sustainable farming system that fits into cultural and economic system of the area. In order to boost sustainable agriculture AWA has been trying to work on many initiatives but so far it has succeeded in the following initiative with the help of Takhleeque Foundation:

1. AWA is partner of the Sustainable Agriculture Development Program since 2003 of Takhleeque Foundation Karachi. Under this program it managed to:
• Mobilize small farmers and peasants on sustainable agriculture.
• Form men and women farmers groups.
• Train these groups on natural and organic farming
• Educate the group about the importance of the sustainable agriculture.
• Arrange exchange visits for framer groups.

Health is one of the key programmatic areas of the organization. AWA believes that it is health that ensures the sustainable foundation of development of any nation or any area. Similarly it is mother that ensures that the family members especially children are healthy. Further AWA thinks that in addition to the concrete and tangible measures for health in form of health services and facilities like hospitals, Basic Health Units (BHUs), Dispensaries, Mother and Child Health Care Centers (MCHCs), provision of medicines and vaccination, intangible measures like sensitization and awareness of the communities especially of women about the health and their role in role in ensuring their individual and family members health is equally important and worth investing in. Women and children are the key focus of its Health Development Program.AWA has far been able to the following activities:

1. Partnership with Health Department District Ghotki for Diagnosis of Hepatitis. Under this partnership AWA organized the following activities:


• Organized screening camps for diagnosing Hepatitis.
• Mobilized the local communities to get themselves screened.
• Managed to screen the blood of the local people for hepatitis diagnosis.


2. AWA is also member of Collation for Tobacco Control (CTC) by its support it organized:


• Rallies/Walks to raise awareness among the local community about the hazards of tobacco.
• Seminars against Tobacco on the world tobacco day.


3. AWA is also partner of World Health Organization (WHO).


• Allakh Monitors the Polio Campaign in District Ghotki as a Third Party Evaluator/Observer.

Disasters either natural and or man-made are inevitable in Pakistan especially Sindh. Ghotki district is not an exception. Laying on the bank of Indus River it has witnessed many floods. Realizing its social responsible to stand by the victims of the disasters and help them, AWA has included Disaster Response Program as one of its key program themes. However it’s Disaster Response Program has focus on the vulnerable section of the affected communities i.e. children and women. Like its health program, women and children are its key focus in the Disaster Response Program as well. It took efforts to provide adequate response in floods 2010.

1. AWA responded very actively to the flood disaster 2010. It carried out the following activities on self help basis:


• In emergency phase AWA established seven camps, provided cooked food to the Flood affected 329 families form 13 August to 22 August.
• Provided dry Ration (Food Items with hygiene Kits).
• Conducted Health and Hygiene sessions.
• In Union Council Qadirpur Allakh establish Six (6) Child Friendly Spaces (CFSs) in six villages.
• Conducted Health & Hygiene Sessions in 6 SCFs.
• Provided WASH facilities in these six CFSs.
• Hygiene Kits distributed in these CFSs.


2. Child Centered Disaster Risk Management & Human Development (CCDRM & HD) program. Under this program AWA carried out the following activities:


• Formed Five Village Organization.
• Organized Capacity Building trainings for the capacity building of Village Organizations for advance preparedness of Flood.
• Formed five Village Protection Committees.
• Village Development Scheme Planned and Executed.
• Village Contingency Plan Developed in these Five Villages.


3. Formation of Child Youth Groups. Under this AWA did the activities as under:


• aFormed five child and youth Groups in five villages. (boys, girls, male and female).
• Conducted Capacity Building trainings.
• Formed Child Protections Committees.
• Ensured CYGs members’ participation in Village Development Plan.
• Prepared Village Contingency Plan.
• Ensured CYGs members’ participation in Village Protection Committees.


4. Detail of School Safety Project activities as under:


• Formation of School safety Committee in six Schools.
• Teachers capacity building training on School Safety Project.
• Capacity building training on First Aid Training & Mock drill.

Provision of small shelters and houses is also makes key place on the portfolio of its programmatic themes/areas. A large section of the society in the district does not have a proper shelter/home especially in the post flood phenomenon. Women and children suffer more if there is no home. In other words it is women and children who benefit most from provision of the home. AWA has been successfully working on this program. Following is the detail:

1. Allakh Welfare Association (AWA) is providing the Roofing materials in Union Council Chandio Tahsil Ubauro District Ghotki with the partnership of Orangi Pilot Project-Research & training Institute (OPP-RTI) Karachi. Yet it has provided roofing materials to 275 flood victimized communities of the district.

Details of Poverty Alleviation Program: Allakh is started Poverty Alleviation program in the city area of Taluka Mirpur Mathelo. In this program Allakh issue the small enterprise loan to shopkeepers on monthly installments bases. It is ongoing program.
